I quote: “And it’s not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations”
I like how the backlash (according to this article anyway) is about the part where they ‘cling to guns or religion’. So what? The ‘antipathy to people who aren’t like them’ is a non-issue? That’s ok? Or is it cos it’s true that no one deemed it prudent to comment about it?
In any case, + points to Obama cos I’m quite condescending about these things myself =p
What’s up with hunting anyway. What kind of stupid pastime is that.
Today was the day the Olympic torch was supposed to pass through San Francisco. The closing ceremony was supposed to take place at Justin Herman Plaza, which was cool because (a) we’d just moved to 4 Embarcadero (b) our business leader’s office happens to overlook the Plaza (c) we’re on the 3rd floor so we get a great view without being too far away. So we were all excited right, cos it was supposed to be such a major event and it was happening right under our noses.
Nevermind that we had to put up with crowd noises all morning, an absolutely horrible band performing horrible covers all afternoon, plus a lion dance troupe with all the lion dance drum and cymbal noises going on ON TOP OF the horrible band with its horrible covers, which was all fricking loud and distracting cos we were so near.
Then at 4pm we find out they changed the relay route so much that the torch was just going to the airport. G effin g. Good job dudes. Way to deprive the rest of us thanks to your stupid irrelevant protests that in all probability will have zero effect on the current state of the world. And kudos to the organisers and whoever else was in charge for chickening out of holding a proper ceremony. If you can’t handle this, how’re you going to deal with it when something really bad actually happens? I mean, WTF is the point of having a bloody torch relay, if no one gets to see the f***ing torch?!
GAH. Obviously all a huge conspiracy to drive us insane. As if we weren’t already having a shitty week at work, go disrupt our peace and eat our bagel stores empty why don’t you.
So we moved to our new office this week (from 3 Embarcadero to 4 Embarcadero, big move) and on Monday we all received a little welcome baggie on our tables. It had-
(a) A mug, in tune with recent efforts to go green. To make sure we use them, they have also hidden all the paper cups they used to keep in lunchrooms. The nice thing about the mugs is that they have our names printed on them. I like the idea; I always felt guilty when I expended a paper cup a day on my water supply, plus I think the names are a really nice little touch.
(b) A 1gb iPod shuffle!!! I must’ve told everyone this already and everyone knows I’m no Apple fan at all, but if I have a free shuffle I’m damn well going to use it! I was kinda hoping they’d have our names engraved on those too, but I guess that would’ve been a bit too much, plus this way we can still sell them brand new on eBay =D I was considering doing that since in all practicality I honestly don’t know when I’ll be using this, between my Zen and my almost-decidedly-incoming PSP, but I don’t really want to sell it or give it away when it was such a nice gesture.
Presents for doing absolutely nothing but throwing my stuff into moving crates and walking into a new building on Monday! It feels so undeserved but I’m not going to raise any complaints.
