Just another Uberotaku.com weblog

I can’t remember how I know this, but some time ago I read/heard somewhere that putting a bit of salt or sugar on your fruit can greatly enhance the taste (like on pineapple or watermelon). Then one day I was trying to eat grapefruit. I really like the smell and taste of grapefruit, but it’s just too damn sour. So I cleverly decided to put a bit of sugar on it, and voila! All the yummy citrusy taste and none of the sour. It’s like magic. And when I say a bit of sugar, I really mean a bit, like a few grains on each slice (obviously if you douse the thing in sugar it’s gonna be sweet). So good! I highly recommend.

Other random thoughts & happenings from the last few days:

  • Au Coquelet is such a great place for picking up useless information about people you know and care nothing about. There’re all these people sitting around having heartfelt conversations and talking about the latest drama in their lives. Today I learned about some woman and some kid called Dylan who’s a delinquent but she loves him like her own son, and some friend of hers that has a horrible kid and is oblivious to it and she doesn’t want to be friends with said friend anymore but doesn’t know how to tell her to stop calling every other day. Then I plugged my headphones in and was greeted with blissful non-talking.
  • I got a stray chocolate chip in my fro-yo the other day. Chocolate chips and tart yogurt Do Not Go. I don’t know why they even offer that as a topping. I don’t know how there can still be noobs walking around eating tarty yogurt with the same toppings as they did with the old school fro-yo that is just nowhere near as good. Incidentally I can feel the tide of this dessert obsession ebbing. I guess it’s just not unhealthy enough to have the same lasting power as bubble tea!
  • I went to Chinatown on Saturday evening and I was so intimidated. I was on a quest to find the instant cereal drinks my dad got me when he was here, and it was scary because the stores have really narrow aisles and there’re full of old no-nonsense Chinese people who know exactly what they’re looking for, and there I am wandering around looking for something that might not be there, deathly afraid that someone’s going to talk to me in Cantonese and that I’m going instinctively and absurdly reply in what little Japanese I know. Sometimes when I’m confronted with a Chinese person in Chinatown I feel the weight of their expectations bearing down on me and I wish I were white instead. And when I speak to them in English I bet they think I’m one of those ABCs who don’t know shit about their own culture and I feel all maligned.
  • I hate to admit this, but YP Yeo made an excellent recommendation and now I’m completely addicted to Greeeen (4 e’s!) This is one of my current favourites (ignore the sappy video):
  • I am unfortunately hooked on the Korean version of Hana Yori Dango. It is such a guilty pleasure but so fun to watch!! YP will be happy to know that they made the Tsukasa character tall this time. And he is hella hot when his hair isn’t curly! (As in the character, not YP. Not that there would be any misunderstanding, but I better not leave any openings here!)
